Comparing two ages
The age difference calculator takes two dates of birth and returns the exact gap between them in years, months and days, as well as in total months, weeks and days. It works in either order and tells you who is the elder.
The method
The calculator starts from the earlier birth date and counts:
- the full calendar months up to the later birth date;
- how many full years and extra months that represents;
- the remaining days after the last full month.
The total difference in days is simply the later date minus the earlier one. Dividing it by 365.2425, the average length of a Gregorian year, gives the gap in decimal years.
Worked example
The first person was born on March 12, 1988 and the second on September 30, 1992.
- From March 12, 1988 to September 12, 1992: 54 full months.
- 54 months = 4 years and 6 months.
- From September 12 to September 30: 18 days.
- In total, 1,663 days, 237 weeks, or 4.55 years. The first person is older.
The gap stays, the ratio shrinks
An age difference in years never changes, but it matters less and less as people get older. A 4-year gap is a third of the age of a 12-year-old and less than a tenth of the age of a 45-year-old.
| Age of the younger person | Age of the older one | Gap as a share of the younger age |
|---|---|---|
| 8 | 12 | 50% |
| 16 | 20 | 25% |
| 30 | 34 | 13% |
| 50 | 54 | 8% |
Common uses
- Siblings and twins: the exact spacing between children, or the hours between twins, which only a time of birth can settle.
- Couples: the average age gap between spouses in the US is about 2 to 3 years, with husbands usually older.
- Teams and classes: checking eligibility when a competition or school year is defined by a range of birth dates.
- Genealogy: comparing generations in a family tree.
A popular rule of thumb
The “half your age plus seven” rule claims that the youngest acceptable partner is half your age plus seven years: 27 for a 40-year-old. It is a cultural guideline with no scientific basis, but it shows how people judge age gaps relative to age, not in absolute years.
