What your commute really costs

A daily commute looks small trip by trip but adds up over a year. Enter the one-way distance and time, how many days you commute, and your cost per mile; the calculator returns the hours, the money, the miles and the CO2 your commute represents each year.

The formulas

  • Trips per year = days per week × working weeks × 2
  • Hours per year = one-way minutes × trips ÷ 60
  • Miles per year = one-way distance × trips
  • Cost per year = miles × cost per mile + parking and tolls × working days
  • CO2 ≈ miles × 400 g for an average gasoline car

Worked example

A typical US commute: 16 miles and 27 minutes each way, 5 days a week, 48 working weeks.

  1. Trips: 5 × 48 × 2 = 480.
  2. Time: 27 × 480 ÷ 60 = 216 hours, or 27 eight-hour working days.
  3. Distance: 16 × 480 = 7,680 miles.
  4. Cost at the full cost of 70 cents per mile: $5,376 a year, or $22.40 per working day.
  5. CO2: about 3 metric tons.

Choosing a cost per mile

What you count Cost per mile
Fuel only, 30 mpg at $3.50 a gallon about 12 cents
Fuel, tires and maintenance 20 to 25 cents
Full cost, including depreciation and insurance 65 to 80 cents
IRS standard mileage rate, 2025 70 cents

Fuel is what you notice at the pump, but depreciation, insurance and repairs are real costs that grow with mileage. The full cost is the right one when comparing driving with transit, a closer home or a remote day.

Putting a value on your time

Multiply the yearly hours by your hourly wage to see what the commute costs in time. At $30 an hour, 216 hours are worth $6,480, more than the driving costs themselves. Commutes that let you read or work, such as a train, reduce that cost; driving does not.

Ways to cut the cost

  • One remote day a week removes 20% of the time and money.
  • Carpooling with one colleague halves the driving cost.
  • Transit passes are often cheaper than the full cost of driving, and many employers offer pre-tax commuter benefits for transit and parking.
  • Cycling for short commutes costs a few cents per mile and adds exercise.

Frequently asked questions

How much does my commute cost per year?

Multiply the round-trip miles by the commuting days and your cost per mile. 16 miles each way, 5 days a week for 48 weeks, at the full driving cost of about 70 cents per mile, comes to $5,376.

What is the real cost per mile of driving?

Fuel alone is about 10 to 15 cents per mile, but the full cost with depreciation, insurance and maintenance is around 70 cents. The IRS business rate, 70 cents for 2025, is a common reference.

How much time do I spend commuting per year?

A 27-minute one-way commute, the US average, adds up to 216 hours a year over 240 working days: 27 eight-hour working days.

How much CO2 does commuting produce?

An average gasoline car emits about 400 g of CO2 per mile, so 7,680 miles a year means roughly 3 metric tons.
