How many days until…?

This countdown calculator counts the days left until a date of your choice or until the next occurrence of a holiday: Christmas, New Year’s Day, Valentine’s Day, Easter, Independence Day, Halloween or Thanksgiving. It also gives the weeks, hours and approximate months, and the weekday of the event.

How the next occurrence is found

For a fixed-date holiday such as Christmas, the calculator takes December 25 of the current year; if that date has already passed, it uses next year’s. Two holidays move every year:

• Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday of November, between November 22 and 28.
• Easter Sunday is the first Sunday after the ecclesiastical full moon that falls on or after March 21. The calculator uses the standard Gregorian computus, which places Easter between March 22 and April 25.

The count does not include today: the day before the event shows 1, and the day itself shows 0.

Worked example

On November 3, 2026:

1. The next Christmas is December 25, 2026, a Friday.
2. December 25 − November 3 = 52 days.
3. That is 7 weeks and 3 days, 1,248 hours, or about 1.7 months.

Upcoming dates

Counting down with children

Days are abstract for young children, so many families count “sleeps”: the number of nights before the event, which equals the countdown. An Advent calendar does the same for the 24 days before Christmas.

Planning ahead

Shipping deadlines, gift orders and travel bookings work best with a few weeks of margin. Use the weeks figure to plan, and the date calculator to find the date a set number of days before the event, such as the last day to order.

A date of your choice

Choose “A date of my choice” for birthdays, weddings, exams, vacations or retirement. If the date has already passed, the result is negative and shows the days elapsed since then.
