How many diapers a baby uses
Babies go through the most diapers in the first weeks, when they feed often and have frequent bowel movements. Usage then falls steadily until potty training, which usually happens between ages 2 and 3.
- Diapers for a period = diapers per day × number of days
- Packs to buy = diapers ÷ diapers per pack, rounded up
- Cost = diapers × price per diaper
Worked example
Your baby is 3 months old and uses about 9 diapers a day. You plan for the next 3 months, buying packs of 120 at about $0.30 per diaper.
- Diapers: 9 × 3 × 30.4 days = 822 diapers.
- Packs: 822 ÷ 120 = 6.9, so 7 packs.
- Cost: 822 × $0.30 = $247, about $82 a month.
- At this rate, a year of diapers would cost about $986.
Diapers per day by age
| Age | Diapers per day | Diapers per month |
|---|---|---|
| Newborn to 1 month | 10 to 12 | 300 to 360 |
| 1 to 5 months | 8 to 10 | 240 to 300 |
| 6 to 12 months | 6 to 8 | 180 to 240 |
| 12 months and older | 4 to 6 | 120 to 180 |
In total, most babies use about 2,500 to 3,000 diapers in the first year and about 5,000 to 6,500 before potty training.
Sizes and weights
Diaper sizes follow weight, not age, and the ranges overlap between brands:
| Size | Typical weight |
|---|---|
| Newborn | up to 10 lb |
| Size 1 | 8 to 14 lb |
| Size 2 | 12 to 18 lb |
| Size 3 | 16 to 28 lb |
| Size 4 | 22 to 37 lb |
| Size 5 | over 27 lb |
Avoid stocking up on newborn size: many babies outgrow it within a few weeks. Larger sizes come with fewer diapers per pack, so the price per diaper rises.
Ways to save
- Compare the price per diaper, not per pack.
- Buy in bulk once you know the size and brand that fit well.
- Use subscriptions and store brands, which often cost 20 to 40% less.
- Consider cloth diapers: higher upfront cost, lower cost over time, especially for a second child.
- Ask about diaper banks: many communities provide free diapers to families in need.
Wipes, rash cream and overnight diapers add to the budget, so plan an extra 10 to 20%.
